What's the climate like in Le Marche Italy?

Le Marche has a varied climate. As a result, every season has something interesting to offer.

Along the Adriatic coast, the climate is mild and Mediterranean, with warm summers and mild winters.

Inland, particularly in the higher-altitude areas, the climate is more continental, with cold, snowy winters and warm, often dry summers.

The region experiences significant temperature differences between the (lower-lying) coast and the inland areas, where the higher-altitude regions and wine-growing areas are located.

Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, but spring and autumn are often slightly wetter. It can sometimes rain heavily, but days when it rains all day are rare.

The diversity of the climate contributes to the region’s rich agriculture, including viticulture and olive growing, and makes it an attractive destination for wine and food enthusiasts.

Spring

Spring in Le Marche begins in March and lasts until the end of May. This is one of the most pleasant seasons, with temperatures rising steadily. It can still be a bit chilly in March, but by April and May, average temperatures rise to between 15°C and 20°C.

Spring is perfect for sightseeing, walks in the countryside and visiting wineries. It isn’t very warm yet, but the sun is already quite strong and provides lovely warmth.

Summer

Summer in Le Marche is a time for basking in the sun, whether you’re a beach lover or a foodie. Temperatures regularly rise above 30°C, which is perfect for those who love warm weather and enjoy a day at the beach.

But there is more than just sun and sea; summer is also the season for the annual wine festivals and celebrations. Whilst enjoying the lovely weather, you can indulge in the local seafood, freshly picked fruit and vegetables, and of course, the delicious wines produced here.

If you fancy a bit of a cool-down on hot days, the higher-altitude Verdicchio wine region is highly recommended. Thanks to the mountain influence, there is often a breeze here during the day and it cools down nicely in the evening to pleasant temperatures. Thanks to the relatively short distance to the sea (approx. 30–40 mins), you can pop straight into the Adriatic Sea. The Cingoli reservoir is also highly recommended for a lovely swim in its crystal-clear waters.

Autumn

Autumn in Le Marche is a culinary feast.

From September to November, temperatures drop to a pleasant 15°C to 25°C.

The winegrowers are about to harvest their grapes. Depending on the grape variety, the vineyard’s location, the season and the type of wine to be produced, the harvest takes place from late August to late September.

In Cupramontana, the annual grape festival takes place at the end of September: the Sagra dell’uva.

Around late October and early November, the olive groves prepare for the harvest of the finest olives to produce delicious olive oil.

Acqualagna is (along with Alba in the north) Italy’s most important region for white and black truffles. Their truffle festival takes place every year in November.

The local cuisine, featuring hearty stews and rich pasta dishes, is a treat for food lovers.

It can be a bit colder in winter, but it rarely freezes, except in the higher-altitude areas (above 1,000 metres).

Here too, the sun makes regular appearances and, when it shines, provides a lovely warmth. In fact, we once had lunch outside in our T-shirts at the end of December.

If you enjoy winter sports, you can visit the region in winter. But a visit to a spa can also provide the necessary relaxation when the temperatures drop. Did you know that Villa Verdicchio has a wonderful spa where you can relax in style?
